Reducing alert volume is an outcome, not a goal. The goal is that every alert can be tied to a decision.
Alert fatigue is usually discussed as a volume problem. The real problem is that the alert does not tell the analyst what to do.
An actionable alert
- What is affected — the asset, account or system.
- Why it matters — the business context of that asset.
- The next step — who does what, and by when.
Without those three it is a notification, not a piece of work.
Setting thresholds
Write down, in advance, the threshold at which each finding type opens a case. Anything below it is reported but does not raise an alert. That is the honest way to cut volume: you do not discard information, you just stop turning it into an interruption.
Measurement
Instead of "alerts per day", track the share of closed alerts that led to an action. If that share is under 10%, the problem is the threshold, not the volume.
